When speaking with children remember to get down to their level. Eye to eye contact is essential to know they are listening and paying attention. Looking at them eye to eye also shows you are interested in what they have to say and they will show you the same amount of respect when you address them as well. Speaking in a calm tone, even when you are upset, is the best way to have a conversation with anyone.
Parents are much more intimidating when they are angry. If you address your child enraged chances are they will shut down and not listen.
It may seem they are listening, but their instinct is to attempt to flee the situation. They will cower and either attempt to run or freeze in their tracks – much like an animal. Children act on instinct and raising your voice just escalades the situation, it doesn’t achieve what you are trying to accomplish - for them to listen. Get down to their level, make eye to eye contact, and keep a calm voice.
