5 Tips from Patti Lawson
Let Your Dog Train You
Let your dog be your personal trainer. Get up and out on the sidewalk with her early and if possible at noon, and again in the evening. Dogs make walks much more fun and interesting than just a determined fast walk to burn calories. Speed up and slow down...sprinting is a metabolism boost. Trust me...chasing squirrels is really a lot of fun!
Dining With Your Dog
Feed yourself when you feed your dog. Breakfast skippers beware. Eating breakfast actually helped me lose weight. Seems our bodies need food in the morning to realize we are not starving them and of course after your morning walk, your dog is hungry and you will be too. Not a a big fan of a traditional breakfast? That's fine! How about yogurt and half a whole grain muffin? Cottage cheese and fruit. Even leftovers from the night before...unless of course you had pizza!
Relieve Dog Stress
Spend quality time with your dog and yourself. Yes...we often neglect to keep ourselves company. Sit and relax with some quiet music while you brush your dog, take a short nap together. Read a dog magazine with your dog at your side...the comfort of my dog Sadie's presence is better than anything for stress.
Healthy Eating: You and Your Dog
Drink water every time you hear your dog drinking water! Water is essential to good health, but we often get busy and just forget until we are thirsty. Sadie is like most dogs...a noisy water slurper...so when I hear that...I always drink a bottle of water as well. Freeze some rosemary in ice cubes, rub fresh mint around the rim of a bottle of water, add lemon, orange, or lime juice. You can make your own flavored water this way.
Daily Activities With Your Dog
Include your dog in your daily activities. A well behaved dog is welcome almost everywhere these days where health regulations allow it. Sadie gets treats at the dry cleaners, the bank, and most retail stores we go to. She loves going with me...of course with summer temperatures DO NOT leave you dog in the car. If you are going somewhere she cannot accompany you inside, leave her at home where she will be comfortable. Temperatures in cars even in the shade rise incredibly fast.
