Virginia Williams
Expert Guru
I have been freelance writing part-time for several years while I raise my kids, though I have a B.A. in English and a M.A. in English/Professional Writing and Editing. I have worked as an in-house proofreader for a publishing company in London and as a freelance business and magazine writer in the U.S.
I consider myself an "near" expert - learning as I go on many things (but knowing where to go to find out correct information)- on parenting and traveling in the Northeast Ohio area, where I currently live.
Interview
What books have most influenced your life? Beloved by Toni Morrison is my all-time favorite novel, and I consider Morrison to be one of the great American authors of our time. Anne Lamott's Operating Instructions is necessary reading for any new mom.
Who are your favorite music artists? At the moment I stick to some of the tried-and-true, as I haven't had enough time to explore new groups as I did in the past: U2, Sting, The Police, the Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, Bonnie Raitt.
What are your favorite websites and why? I love writing websites, including absolutewrite.com, the renegadewriter.com, writersweekly.com and writersrow.com for all the great tips, networking and advice. I am somewhat blog obsessed at the moment and regularly read amalah.com, maternallychallenged.typepad.com, and especially love Catherine Newman's benandbirdy.blogspot.com and her blog at wondertime.com.
Where else can people find you on the web? I have set up a blog, do-one-thing.blogspot.com, though it is very much a work in progress; one day soon I will also have a website of my very own.
What are your professional highlights? Highlights of my career include being selected as a Go-To mom for the website www.clubmom.com for 2005-2006 and winning a Renegade Writer Career Makeover in April 2007.
What advice do you have for the journey of life? Everything changes - sometimes you just need to take a deep breath and ride out the hard stuff, look for the good stuff, and believe you can survive whatever comes your way.
What are you most passionate about in life? My family, my books, and my very weedy garden, which can't wait to grow up and be a masterpiece.
What ticks you off? Drivers who don't use their turn signals; husbands who don't turn off the lights after they leave the room.
Any thoughts or ideas on living a greener life? Become a mindful consumer - and consume less "stuff".
What would people be surprised to know about you? When I was little, I wanted to grow up to be a jockey or a Rockette.
Philosophy
I love the Gandhi quote "You must be the change you wish to see in the world" and I strive to live my life following this maxim. I don't mean to sound like Pollyanna, but I do believe that every one of us can make a difference in the world every day, if we consciously strive to better ourselves and our surroundings.

4 Tips from Virginia Williams
Best Burger in Town
Those who live in Cleveland know that one of the best - and most expensive - meals in town can be found at Johnny's on W. 6th Street. Fewer people know that Johnny's owns a bar just around the corner, the Little Bar and Grill, which serves what is arguably the best burger going. Made from the offcuts of the steaks they serve on W. 6th, the Little Bar offers up thick, juicy, real beef burgers and handcut fries with an extra bit of class borrowed from its brother next door.
Saving Water Adds Up
You could save 1-3 gallons of water a day by using the water left in your drinking glass, the tea kettle, or used to boil pasta, to water your plants inside or out. A household of four could save up to 21 gallons of water per week (or more) by thinking creatively about water usage in this way.
West Side Market
Located just west of downtown, across the Detroit-Superior Bridge, thee West Side Market offers some of the freshest produce, meats, cheeses and homemade pastas in Cleveland. The market is a true microcosm of the American melting pot, with everything from pierogies to spices, Middle Eastern dishes and Irish pasties and shepherd's pie. Open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; the West Side Market Cafe is open 7 days a week.
