10 Tips from Kim Tolander

Quick Sandwich Shop On Your Way to Fenway for a Red Sox Game

In the rush to a Red Sox Game, a patisserie is not the first thought that comes to mind for a quick meal. Welcome to the new Kenmore Square! Truly Jorg's Patisserie is perfectly located next to the Kenmore Station T Stop exit and serves fantastic pre-made sandwiches on freshly baked french baguettes. Most days finds at least choices of turkey or ham, but many days there are more. Sandwiches are easy to grab and go, but in the nice weather, there's a small outdoor seating area too. Best part of picking up a sandwich at a patisserie? The desserts, of course. If you have time and/or the appetite, don't miss the to-go friendly heavenly creations of chef Jorg including the cherry almond tart and cupcakes.

Cost Cutting Secret for Your Wedding: Start with the Date

Want to cut costs in your wedding budget? Start with the date. Talk with the wedding locales in your area about discounts available during certain months or days of the week? Most weddings are planned for Saturday, so many wedding sites have discounts for Friday or Sunday weddings. Even more discounts are usually available for weekday weddings. Same thing goes for the time of the year. If summer weddings are all the rage in your area, think about a winter wedding. It could mean a signficiant decrease in the amount that you'll have to pay for your reception. Think out of the box, and save some cash!

Test Your New Product or Service Using Online Auctions

Online auction sites, like eBay, can be a great, low cost way to test market your new product or service. Not only can you gauge interest using the built-in audience, but you can also test different sales & marketing messages. In addition, you can measure different metrics including visitors, bids/purchases, and frequent questions.

Don't Skip Orientation!

If your college offers orientation, don't skip it! Orientation is your opportunity to get acquainted with the services and rules of your new school. In addition, most orientation sessions will assist you in registering for your classes. Parent Orientations, if offered by the college, are also a good idea for parents of incoming freshmen. These sessions usually cover concerns of parents of college students including safety issues, academic issues, and school services.

Plan Your Attack for Travel Receipts

Whether you work for a company, and you have to fill out an expense report, or whether you work for yourself and have to keep your receipts for your end of the year tax return, keeping track of all the receipts generated by a business trip is daunting. The tip? It's simple. Take along a receipt envelope. Your receipt envelope can be as simple as a plain, white #10 envelope. Use it to collect every receipt you receive on your trip. Don't worry about which receipts you'll need, it will be easier to sort them after the trip is over. Once you return, you'll thank yourself when it's easy to file that expense report.

Start a Sucess Folder Now!

Create a folder to begin collecting examples of your work. You'll thank yourself the next time you begin a job search. Include copies of anything tangible that you created or helped create (e.g. reports, publications, or printed web pages). Also include any awards, thank you notes, or job-well-done notices you might receive. This success folder will be very helpful as a portfolio or as an aide in drafting your resume and cover letter.

Save Money on Your Meeting Budget

The key to keeping costs low for your corporate events is to plan ahead! Tally up your organization's corporate events (e.g. board meetings, trainings, and sales meetings) for the upcoming year, and find a location that would be a good site for the range of events. Be sure to think about overnight rooms that you might need throughout the year. It's often very hard to get a good rate for a small number of rooms, but when combined throughout the year, the total number may gardner a decent rate. An event site sales manager may be more willing to offer good rates and deals in exchange for the entire piece of business. Using the same locale also makes planning easier. A relationship can develop with the employeess at the event location that can make on-site logistics easier.

Experience the Magic of Times Square

Rise above the nearly 90,000 pedestrians that can traverse Times Square on a summer weekend day and get a birds-eye view of the famous square for the cost of a drink. Visit the Broadway Lounge of the Marriott Marquis located at lobby level (8th Floor) for an unbelievable view of Times Square. The lounge offers small tables for drinks and a tapas and light fare menu. It won't be the cheapest drink in New York City, but it won't be the most expensive either.

Free Shipping Boxes from the Post Office

If you are shipping Priority or Express mail with the USPS, you can order free boxes and envelopes via the USPS web site. You can also pick up free priority mail and express mail packaging at your local post office in limited supply.
