10 Tips from Dana Prince
Rotate Your Signature Line
Self promotion is the key to success in affiliate marketing. Using your e-mail account's signature line or using a signature line in community forums is a great way to add a bit of advertising to every one of your e-mails or posts. A good tip is that if you are using this medium to attract visitors to either join an affiliate marketing program or to visit your website where they will potentially purchase something that you're trying to sell, it's a good idea to change your signature line occasionally.
You can rotate advertisements which will help you attract visitors. If you continually have the same advertisement people who see your signature line all the time will become numb to it whereas if you change it regularly, the likelihood of someone clicking on it increases. Change prompts curiousity.
Avoiding Click Fraud
As a Google Adsense affiliate, when telling your family or friends about your web site it might be best to avoid telling them that you earn money through people clicking on your ads.
While you'd be happy if they clicked on websites naturally with the intent to purchase something or sign up for a refferal program, you don't want people trying to 'help you out' by simply clicking on your Google Ads otherwise Google will terminate your account for click fraud. It's best to let things happen naturally in the case of these types of affiliate programs.
Blend Ads In With The Layout Of Your Site
Designing your website in such a way that your advertisements blend in with the look and feel of your site can make users more likely to want to click on your banners or advertisements.
Too many loud and flashing banners or clashing colors can make the site hard on your viewer's eyes and will make it less likely for them to want to click on your banners. Having a well blended website can keep people browsing for longer instead of making them squint at flashing ads or pages that are too "busy". Designing your website so that the advertisements blend in to the look and feel of the site will give your site more of an appeal to your visitors. While they will likely still be aware that you have advertisements on the site, not trying to 'trick' them into clicking with annoying pop-ups or flashing banners will lend credibility to your site.
Multiple Commission Levels Create Energy and Ambition To Sell
To get your associates or merchants working harder to sell your product or service, consider offering multiple tiers of rewards for their efforts to keep them motivated.
Having different commission levels based on the volume of sales, number of refferals or other reward programs can make your program something that your affiliates will focus more energy on.
Many of the successful programs that are out there attribute that success to having a progressive commission structure so that as the associate sells more products, their payout level increases or they earn additional rewards.
Keeping your associate affiliates motivated with rewards will help them focus even more energy on selling your product or service.
Focus On One Program At A Time
As you get started in affiliate marketing, choose a single program to work at and become successful with. As tempting as it can be to join the dozens of programs you are interested in, the best way to grow your business is by starting small and expanding it slowly. This way, you find out what works and can focus on growing your business one product at a time.
People who go live on day one with a new website and a dozen different focuses may find themselves confused about why they aren't making money. With each program having various nuances and terms/conditions you would be more able to expand successfully with one program at a time.
Affiliate Managers or Territory Leaders Can Help Manage Large Pools of Associates
Hiring affiliate managers for your associates is a good idea in order to help keep your associates focused and motivated. This is especially true if you have a busy company with a large number of associates. Having a group or territory leader for products or services helps grow your business. Experienced affiliate managers work directly with your field associates to help them sell more and act as a point of communication to the company which can save your company valuable resources.
Affiliate managers can be hired on a commission basis remotely so that you only pay out based on positive results. You could even incent your super affiliates by setting them up in team structures and paying them a referral fee for increased sales under their territory.
Refferal Networks Take More Than Just Sign-Ups To Be A Success
While signing up people under referral programs is a great bonus in affiliate marketing and can net great revenue results for your business, if you simply recruit others but don't help them to sell and don't sell the products yourself, you won't get very far. If you sign someone up under you but neither of you sell anything, it won't amount to much.
However, if you sign people up under you and then help them sell the product everyone will benefit. Some programs have multi-tiered refferals so you may even earn commission from your refferal's referrals. This is most effective, obviously if everyone is selling. If you can get the individuals in your downline motivated to sell products and sign up users, everyone benefits. Helping them with tips and pep talks is a great start.
Ensure You Spend Your Time Wisely on Reciprocal Linking
Reciprocal linking only works where there is a common denominator. If you join link exchanges where others help you by promoting your website on their site and vice versa, this is a great way to bring in extra traffic to your site. Ensure you are doing this with relevant sites. Many people that practice link exchanges wonder why it doesn't bring results but you need to exchange links with complimentary (but non-competitive) websites. For example, if you are selling jewelry, you wouldn't exchange links with a gaming website but instead you might look for a clothing or cosmetics site to network with. Capturing the right audience is key in helping you get the kind of visitors you want.
Loyalty Programs For Rewarding Affiliates
If you want to start an affiliate program but have very slim margins, you may want to consider a point loyalty program or other reward program to recruit affiliates. For example, offering coupons for referrals or discounts or free products can create a small affiliate network for your company if you feel you are not ready to share in commission. Some companies offer discounts to those who bring in new clients which helps you not have to share margins but does rewards people who buy a lot of your product and are willing to help you spread the word.
Community Forums Are Excellent Communication Tools
If creating an affiliate program for your company, create a community forum or blog community for you and your affiliates. When associates have an ability to network with one another and share ideas, it can be a great motivator for selling more product. As a company, you can gain insights into what is working and not working so you can improve upon your program. This is also a great way to communicate with your associates in an interactive way to tell them about new products or new promotions that can help them sell more. The more invested your associates feel in your program, the harder they'll work to make your company a success.
